Information Systems Institute at the University of Leipzig Chooses the IMSL Numerical Libraries on Windows HPC Server 2008

Developing new Simulation System for Multi-modal Logistic Networks

HOUSTON, TX – May 19, 2009 -- Today, Visual Numerics, Inc., part of Rogue Wave Software and a producer of advanced numerical analysis and visualization software announced that the Information Systems Institute, Department of Economics at the University of Leipzig has chosen the IMSL® C# Numerical Library to provide statistical functions for an application that will simulate multi-modal logistic networks. The IMSL C# Library was chosen for its functionality, native C# implementation and compatibility with Microsoft’s Windows HPC Server 2008.

The logistic system being developed will simulate the transportation of packages by logistic service providers (LSPs) as well as the interaction between LSPs and consumers using a combination of real data from existing LSPs and random data generated with IMSL C# Library functions. The system will offer capabilities such as forecasting demand, optimizing transportation routes, calculating disaster cases and, most importantly, finding new correlations between variables in the logistics network. For example, LSPs looking for the optimal mix of rail versus road delivery for packages could use the system to consider variables such as the density of the rail network and the amount of road tolls to determine when and where to shift package delivery to trains or trucks.

“Our goal is to create a platform that we can share with other researchers and LSPs that optimizes the entire logistics system,” said Tilo Dietrich, University of Leipzig. “While individual LSPs will benefit through optimized delivery and reduced costs, we hope that the system and research will deliver a wider benefit of more reliable, more efficient transportation that better serves consumers and reduces the impact of the transportation of packages on our environment.”

The logistic system will analyze data types ranging from complex networks over multi-dimensional matrices to simple numerical parameters and leverage multiple algorithms from the IMSL C# Library. For example, Monte Carlo simulators will generate random data while the Neural Networks algorithm will forecast demand and optimize delivery routes. “The IMSL C# Library gives the University of Leipzig hundreds of statistical and mathematical algorithms that they can incorporate into their logistics application,” said Dr. Ed Stewart, IMSL Numerical Libraries Product Manager, Visual Numerics. “As they develop on Windows HPC Server 2008, the IMSL C# Library will also help them deliver a high performance application using popular .NET and other Microsoft development tools.”

“Visual Numerics is an essential part of bringing high performance computing mainstream,” said Vince Mendillo, director of HPC marketing at Microsoft Corp. “IMSL Numerical Libraries help analytics developers utilize the power of parallel processing from their desktops with a familiar Windows platform and easy-to-use tools. We’re pleased to see the University of Leipzig using these tools to develop this high performance logistic application.”
